There's some really good news coming out of the National Federation for Independent Business, which is reporting a record high in optimism and plans for growth among its membership of American small businesses. And importantly, it's not just good news for the companies — it's good for workers, too! Many of you whom I have met personally know that I am an instrument rated pilot. As a pilot, I use checklists before, during and after every flight. They are a very important part of aviation for many reasons. Checklists promote safety by ensuring that critical tasks are completed. They also ensure that these tasks are done in sequence and that they are performed at the right time. For example, it is generally considered too late to put your gear down after landing. Finally, they ensure that everyone in aviation behaves and works in a consistent manner. The stakes are high so discipline is essential.

Cycle counting is a topic that normally comes up during — or shortly after — the “up-and-running” phase of an enterprise resource planning (ERP) on-boarding is complete. Why do we implement enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions? Ask several different companies, and you will get a variety of answers. The one response I hear most often, indeed a common refrain from those who are most successful, is: “To integrate all facets of our business on a single application platform.” This makes sense, especially when you consider that the 'E' in ERP is Enterprise.

Worldwide manufacturing growth in the industrialized countries has been flat, and is forecast to remain flat for the foreseeable future. In a flat market, the fastest path to double digit growth for manufacturers is to steal share from less nimble competitors. What's your international growth strategy?

A study by the U.S. Bureau of the Census found: "Major factors in a firm's remaining open include an ample supply of capital, the fact that a firm is large enough to have employees, the owner's education level, and the owner's reason for starting the firm in the first place, such as freedom for family life or wanting to be one's own boss."

2018 was an exciting year for complying with sales tax regulations. 2019 promises to be the same.
